XRO in the Community and News

APRIL 2010: Dr. Geoffrey Weinstein spoke at Sharp Heathcare’s annual Radiation Medicine Seminar.  The seminar focused on how radiation medicine is used to treat lung cancer, and was organized by XRO’s chief physicist at Sharp Memorial, Dr. Shirish Jani.

Sharp Memorial specializes in using stereotactic radiosurgery for early-stage, unresectable lung cancer as well as for limited metastatic tumor burdens.  Data from Memorial has recently been accepted at the annual ASTRO meeting scheduled for late October 2010 here in San Diego.

JUNE 2010: Dr. Lori Coleman will be hosting a community seminar at Palomar Hospital in Escondido on June 15th from 6 to 7:30 PM at the Graybill Auditorium.  To find out more information visit www.pph.org or call 1-800-628-2880.

XRO Research

JUNE 2008:  Drs. Volpp and Coleman initiated an IRB-approved protocol to use stereotactic body radiosurgery on early-stage prostate cancer patients.  This protocol, now in its second year and with slight modifications to include some intermediate-stage patients, is now multi-institutional and continues to accrue patients on the new Novalis TX machine based out of Palomar Hospital.

JUNE 2010: Drs. Volpp and Weinstein assisted in research by their chief physicist, Dr. Shirish Jani, entitled “Technical Aspects of a Simple and Effective Method to Perform Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) in Lund Cancer Patients Without 4D-CT and Gating”.  This research has been accepted for presentation at the 2010 American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) meeting in Philadelphia on July 18th, 2010.  It discusses the success we have had in treating lung tumors with body radiosurgery at Memorial using a novel setup which was designed by Dr. Jani and his physics/dosimetry team.

JUNE 2010: Dr. Shirish Jani, chief physicist at Sharp Memorial, continues his drive to create cutting-edge technology out of his department with an abstract entitled “Feasibility of Making In-Vivo Peripheral Measurements Using a Portable Dosimeter System—Beta Testing of a Novel Device”.  This data will be presented at the 2010 AAPM Meeting in Philadelphia on July 18th, 2010.

JUNE 2010: Drs. Volpp, Weinstein, and Jani will present their Memorial-based data on their Novalis machine for brain tumor patients in an abstract entitled “Performance of an ExacTrac Image-Guided system in mask-based cranial radiotherapy on a classic Novalis machine—a 5-year experience”.  This data has been accepted at the annual American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in San Diego beginning October 31st, 2010.

JUNE 2010:  Drs. Volpp, Weinstein, and Jani  will present their data on outcomes in patients with lung cancer treated with stereotactic body radiosurgery at Memorial.  As with the above data on brain tumor Novalis-based therapy, this Novalis-based lung cancer data will be presented at the 2010 annual ASTRO meeting in San Diego beginning October 31st, 2010.
